The Legacy

The Inspiration and Purpose Behind Ms. Ann’s Helping Hands

Ms. Ann’s Helping Hands was founded in honor of Sarah Ann Acker, a woman known for her joyful spirit and heart of gold. Whenever she was affectionately called “Ms. Ann,” she would laugh uncontrollably—moments that were deeply special and meaningful. From those cherished memories, the name Ms. Ann’s Helping Hands was born.

In addition, “Ma” was a special nickname given to her daughter by both her mother and father. “Ma” short for Marcia. It was a name she knew instantly—if she heard it, she knew it was coming from one of them. That deeply personal connection lives on through the organization’s abbreviation, MAHH, which stands for Ms. Ann’s Helping Hands—a name and acronym rooted in love, legacy, and heart.

When Sarah Ann Acker was diagnosed with kidney failure, her 3rd daughter Marcia Acker often served as her care giver, even while still in high school. At a young age, she witnessed firsthand the daily need for personal care assistance to help with basic tasks around the home. Unfortunately, her family did not know where to turn or how to access a personal care aide.

Years later, a similar challenge arose when her great-grandmother, Marie Truesdale, began to age and required assistance in her home. Because she was a homeowner, she did not qualify for Medicaid, and private care services were financially out of reach. Once again, the family found themselves without adequate support.

These lived experiences revealed a significant gap in care for families facing similar circumstances.

Our Mission

Ms. Ann’s Helping Hands was created to bridge the gap for families who do not qualify for Medicaid yet cannot afford private personal care services. The organization partners with agencies and community resources to connect families with personal care aides and essential support, allowing individuals to age with dignity and receive care in the comfort of their homes.

This mission is deeply rooted in love, lived experience, and a commitment to ensuring that no family feels alone or overwhelmed when care is needed most.

Our VISION

We envision strong, supported communities where individuals and families have access to care, resources, and opportunities that allow them to thrive—regardless of age, illness, or financial circumstance.
